The sambar deer is quite common in the southern region of India including Kerala Tamil Nadu and Karnataka due of the human activity and  population pressure on the forest this animals habitat is threatened and are endangered



The sambaris a large deer native to the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia that is listed as a vulnerable species on the IUCN Red List since 2008. Populations have declined substantially due to severe hunting, local insurgency, and industrial exploitation of habitat.


Sambar deer (Rusa unicolor) are a species of large deer native to the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia. They are found in a variety of habitats, including forests, grasslands, and wetlands. In Kerala, they are commonly found in the Western Ghats, a mountain range that runs parallel to the western coast of the state. Sambar deer are known for their distinctive appearance, with a reddish-brown coat and large, coarsely branched antlers. They are herbivorous, feeding on a variety of plants and grasses. Sambar deer are an important prey species for many predators, including tigers and leopards, and they are also hunted by humans for their meat and antlers.
